3D-PAWS Training with UCAR, EMI and BDMS - Addis Ababa

3d-paws ucar bdms training instrumentation

RAMP Lab will participate in a regional 3D-PAWS training event hosted by the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 10–23 May 2026. The training is led by UCAR’s COMET Program, with participation from the Botswana Department of Meteorological Services (BDMS) and RAMP Lab at the University of Botswana.

The training will cover the full workflow of 3D-printed automatic weather station deployment: hardware assembly and calibration, sensor configuration, data transmission, and quality control. Participants will practice fabricating station components and troubleshooting in field conditions.

For RAMP Lab, the training strengthens the lab’s capacity to help build a critical mass of young African expertise in 3D-printing and related emerging technologies, with 3D-PAWS fabrication as one concrete application. This will be done through teaching and research at the University of Botswana. In support of the work led by partners at UCAR and BDMS, RAMP Lab will contribute to the expansion of low-cost surface observation infrastructure across Botswana and the wider SADC region.

UB and BDMS participation is supported by the Enhancing Meteorological Networks Partnership (EMNP), led by UCAR and the UCSB Climate Hazards Center.
